Scientific Methods to Evaluate a Driver Response

I have been a user of the IDRR software for several years. As a Human Factors expert I have access to the same resources as the DRI team, but found having all of the information at my fingertips to be highly valuable. The new Response program offers the user so much more. Clearly the DRI team has invested a lot of time and expertise in their development of the Response program, which now answers most any driver human factors questions. In my opinion (to a reasonable degree of scientific certainty), where IDRR was a highly valuable tool, Response is an invaluable tool to any accident reconstruction expert. I will be a lifelong user!

Response is an absolute must for anyone in the crash reconstruction consulting business. Response saves me many hours of research per case doing research and I can be confident that I have not missed an important research paper. Response also offers advice to ensure that the user is applying the correct analysis to the crash. Response will also perform time-distance calculations which is useful for checking the user’s hand calculations. I highly recommend Response for all crash reconstruction consultants.

Just logged in for the first time and went through the initial videos and I have to say, my first 20-minute off-the-cuff reaction to Response as a long-time IDRR user is: “WOW”! Seems really robust and user-friendly and I can’t wait to dive in during my next need for PRT data. So nice to see you guys send out the fruit of what is clearly a well-thought-out (and labored over!) summation of all of Jeff’s work over the years. Congratulations on the release and best wishes for its continued success and growth.

Headlamp export to CSV! Excellent feature. It makes it so much simpler to then import to Virtual Crash 5, create a mesh and then attach to the moving vehicle. In one simulation I can visualize the differences between high and low beam entry for pedestrians. Great stuff. I look forward to digging through the new interface to see what else I can find. It is the most indispensable software in my toolkit.

IDRR is one of the best and most used tools in my recon kit, helping me answer a fundamental question of every case: was the collision avoidable? It gets better and more useful with every update and I look forward to seeing what’s next.

Over the past ½ century, there have been many advancements that have really changed the practice and education of Crash Investigation and Reconstruction.  The use of a total station, crash simulation software, portable scanning, the use of a portable drone, and of course vehicle technology with EDR data.  Amongst these advancements, in my humble opinion, is the work done by Dr. Muttart.

His efforts in conducting studies, gathering on-point scientific data and the creation of IDRR has greatly improved the science of Crash Reconstruction. Dr. Muttart’s work has and will continue to improve classroom teaching and reconstructionist abilities for objective scientific analysis.

It was my pleasure to recommend him years ago to join the staff at Northwestern University CPS and I highly recommend that all in this industry take Dr. Muttart’s classes a few times over the years and utilize IDRR when appropriate.

A lot of my cases involve recognition of path intrusion or closing speed and IDRR gives me an incredible foundation… when I testify about these issues. I can’t thank Jeff, Swaroop, Lynn, and Sunny enough for the work they continue to put into ensuring we’re all out there relying on good science.

Before IDRR, human factors research was out of reach. IDRR has become an invaluable tool in my toolbox of collision reconstruction software programs. A complete collision analysis and reconstruction simply cannot be completed without using this most valuable tool.

I purchased IDRR about 5 years ago at an IPTM Symposium and am extremely happy for doing so, The investment has been worth its weight in gold. I am able to validate the PRT calculations against studies to calculate the mean and standard deviations.

Prior to IDRR, I had to search through numerous references to provide a range of PRT pertinent to the case of interest. IDRR dramatically simplified that process for me. IDRR also provides data for the human factors specialist, beyond PRT.

I have found the program (I.DRR) to be very useful on a large number of cases. I appreciate that the formulas and references are explicitly stated or displayed, so that I.DRR results are easy to integrate into an expert report.
